As Social creatures we rely heavily on the people around us for getting cues on how to think, feel and act. As human beings we have a subconscious urge to belong, to follow the crowd, to do what others are doing; be it buying a product or choosing a restaurant to dine out. When it comes to making decisions in a social situation, where the scenario is confusing or new, we look around for evidence of “how others do things around here. This phenomenon is called Social Proof. Social Proof is a psychological mechanism where we look to others to guide our own actions.

Social Proof can also be used to great effect when selling products or services. Many successful marketers have used Social proof knowingly or unknowingly to successfully launch products, increase sales and build brand value. Social proof manifests itself in human beings as a psychological trigger and it can pack a powerful punch. It can prompt hundreds of people to make positive decisions about a product or service at the same time. We see this with standing ovations at the end of concerts. Initially only a few people may start stamping their feet/ others are heading for the exit. However once the “social proof” starts to take effect, legitimizing the belief that this group is worthy of having an encore requested, even those heading for the exit, cancel their plans, turn around and get ready for the rest of the show.
